Island and Night Lakes - A tough time on an easy hike (Beartooth Highway)
We couldn't catch a break on this adventure! The drive along the Beartooth Highway was beautiful and the hike along Island and night lakes was gorgeous as well as easy - EXCEPT, we just had one mishap after another.
We hope our misadventures provide some entertainment for you. Also, hopefully you get an idea for a great hike on your trip over the Beartooth Highway!

Hoback Guard Station and Grand Teton National Park
Переглядів 5683 роки тому
We took a trip down to Grand Teton National Park! I've taken Laura down there two times before and both times the park was completely socked in. Laura probably started to doubt the existence of the Tetons 😂. This time they were pretty smokey, but we were still able to get a pretty good look at them. While we were down there, we stayed at the Hoback Guard Station. We found it to be one of the ni...
Holland Lake (Seeley Valley) Montana - Plus Blackfoot Pathways Sculpture Park (Lincoln MT)

What a gorgeous Montana lake to spend a couple of days on with the family! We stayed at the Owl Creek Cabin (US Forrest Service) for one of Jack's first camping trips. We got in a hike up to the waterfall at the head of the lake, which is fittingly called Holland Falls. The views up there were awesome! The Owl Creek Cabin seems to cater to people with pack animals staging trips into the Bob Mar...
Grizzly filling up for Hibernation - Yellowstone (Tom Miner Basin)
Переглядів 2,2 тис.4 роки тому
We have been searching all over the Yellowstone area for grizzly bears this summer, and we FINALLY found one. On a beautiful day in October, we finally came upon a "bear jam" in the Tom Miner basin. She was beautiful, with her winter coat fully developed and she was digging for roots and the occasional ground squirrel. But enough of my description! Watch the awesome bear yourself!

Sage Creek campground - Pryor Mountains, Montana
Переглядів 1,1 тис.4 роки тому
We took Jack on his first camping trip and he did great! I (Shane) had always wanted to check out the Pryor mountains, because it's such an interesting looking range from Carbon County. I was glad that we were able to take some time and get up into the high country. It was really much more lush than I had expected it to be. A lot of that area is in the rain shadow of the Beartooth Mountains - t...
REI Co-Op 650 Down Mens Jacket Review

In this week's episode of adventures of Shane and Laura, we bring you a review of an affordable lightweight packable men's down jacket, the REI Co op 650 Down Men's Jacket. This is a bargain of a down jacket at $50 on the REI outlet. It isn't the fanciest, but it will certainly do the trick especially if you are looking for a super lightweight super warm mid-layer. The trail is great for families or people with accessibility needs, and we were glad that we could take Jack out on his first hike without breaking our backs. Devils Canyon Overlook Bighorn Canyon Montana and Wyoming

We took the drone out to the Devil's Canyon Overlook in the Bighorn Canyon National Recreational Area and we were not disappointed. This canyon is truly stunning with 1000 foot drops at either wall. There is a nice sturdy railing along the main portion of the overlook, and views include a sort of double horseshoe, where a tributary comes in and forms a sort of offshoot canyon. This truly remark...
Run to the Pub - Bozeman

The Run to the Pub has become quite an event in Bozeman Montana. Thousands of people come from all over the state to run the 10k or half marathon. People seem to lose their minds - to the point that if the person initially called doesn't respond immediately there are calls from the crowd to draw another number ra...

When we first got to South Padre Island, we wouldn't have known that it was supposed to be a (sub) Tropical Vacation! It was windy wet and cold! We also got to see all sorts of neat wildlife from various herons to pelicans to crabs. It was really fun spending some time building s...

Did it back in 2006, but we camped at Baker Lake. Greeted by a big thunderstorm as we arrived at the lake as daylight waned. Thankfully got the tents up before the downpour. Headed for the summit the following morning. My wife and I made it to the summit first and as we waited for the others, the clouds were gathering and the thunder was rumbling. By the time we headed back down, we would get little static discharges between our fingers and the rocks we were scrambling on. And my sister-in-law’s hair started to stand on end. Not long after we got down a little ways a very loud clap of thunder made it obvious the summit had just been struck. I decided then and there I’d never let a thunderstorm move in that close while we were on a summit ever again.

    • @kappy0405
      @kappy0405 Рік тому

What else is there to say? You show up as early as possible, pray there's an open spot, occupy it asap before you register. If there's not a spot, look on the posts for people's checkout dates, and if someone's leaving wait around so you can take their spot as soon as they leave. Check the NPS websites to find out which campgrounds offer first come, first serve sites.

@@kappy0405 Already went and came back. I didn't have to wait anywhere and I had a fabulous campground with a 360º mountain view. First come campgrounds beat the exceedingly busy reservation ones by far. Lake Louise had 2 RVs to every single site. I was happily situated in a quiet campground with an extremely clean heated bathroom. Perfection.

Most day hike peaks are not accessible this time of the year because of the snow pack, so I would recommend hiking the “M”. You could try going up to Baldy (check out our Mt. Baldy video) and go as far as you can until it gets too snowy. Plus, the “M” is on the Mt. Baldy hike.

i lived near Glacier Park (Whitefish) for over 30 years. hiked, climbed, biked, and camped too many times to count. summited over 20 peaks, some more than 10 times. hiked nearly every trail in the park. fished Hidden lake dozens and dozens of times. loved it.....until about 2010. then the masses came. waaaaay too many people relocated to the nearby Flathead valley and literally overran the park. it became untenable. rude, pushy, in-your-face, gun-toting (yes, Glacier now allows guns) idiots with little or no knowledge of wildlife or trail etiquette. my last 2 years (i moved to Ecuador 2 months ago) i seldom visited the park, despite its beauty, and visited the surrounding area instead - just to get away from the idiots. when it gets so bad, that you avoid a place of such beauty, it says something about the riffraff that took over. sad. so very sad. i have my memories and thousands of pictures from mountain tops and trials. but i won't go back. i know what it was like, and it will never be the same-----because of the rude people. sorry. that's the raw truth.....
